Raw Material Process Engineering · B.Sc.
Mineral Process Engineering 1
From run-of-mine ore to a saleable concentrate: ore characterisation and liberation, metallurgical accounting, material handling, crushing and grinding, screening and classification, gravity and dense-medium separation, dewatering and tailings, and the mechanical processing of e-waste. Taught as interactive lectures with animated machine sections, live calculators, mini-games, quizzes and homework.
Part A · Foundations
What a concentrator is for, how an ore is characterised, how its output is measured and accounted for, and how bulk solids are stored and moved.
Part B · Comminution and Sizing
Breaking rock to liberate its minerals at the lowest energy cost, and separating the broken product by size on screens and in classifiers.
Part C · Concentration, Dewatering and Recycling
Exploiting differences in density, magnetism, conductivity and surface chemistry; recovering water; storing tailings; and applying the same unit operations to electronic scrap.
Interactive simulators
Run the machines of this course in the browser — no installation.
Module information
Learning outcomes
- Characterise an ore and relate its mineralogy and liberation to a processing route.
- Calculate mass, metal and water balances, grade, recovery and circulating loads from plant data.
- Explain, select and size crushers, mills, screens, classifiers, feeders and conveyors.
- Explain and select gravity, dense-medium, magnetic and flotation concentration and dewatering equipment, and draw a complete ore-preparation flow diagram.

How to use the lectures
- Arrow keys or swipe to move; T = contents, G = glossary, F = presentation mode.
- Dotted terms open their definition; tap the hotspots on every machine drawing.
- Each lecture ends with exercises, three timed game rounds, a quiz with explanations and homework.
Mongolian industry
Every lecture links its topic to Mongolian operations — Erdenet, Oyu Tolgoi, Ukhaa Khudag and Tavan Tolgoi coal, Tömörtei magnetite, Zaamar placer gold, Boroo gold and Bor-Öndör fluorite — so that the numbers students calculate are the numbers of their own industry.
